We are very excited for the start of the school year and happy to have your child starting kindergarten at Moreland this year! Your child will be in the hybrid/in person learning model. Students with the last name beginning with A-K will attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays (This is the A group) and will do at home learning on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Students with the last name beginning with L-Z (This is the B group) will attend school on Thursdays and Fridays and will do at home learning on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Our school day is from 7:30-2 p.m. whether they are at school or learning at home.
In order to help you and your child know all that you need to know about school this year, we are having parent informational meetings online via Google Meet for all kindergarten families. The parent informational meeting will be on Monday, September 14 at 9:00 AM for students who attend school on Monday and Tuesday. The link to join the Google Meet is

If you can not attend the day you are scheduled for, you can attend the other one. This will be a time to learn more about what the school day will look like and you will also be able meet the principal, school nurse, school counselor and the classroom teacher.
We are also providing a half day Get to Know the School and Teacher Day just for kindergarten students. This will be from 7:30 - 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15 for students who will be attending school on Monday and Tuesday and on Friday, September 18 for students who attend school on Thursday and Friday. The students will be provided with breakfast and lunch. District bus transportation will be available on those days to bring students to school and back home. If you registered for bus transportation for your child you should have received a bus card with the pick up and drop off times for next week. Prior to the start of school you will receive another bus transportation card with the regular pick up and drop off times for the bus stop.
The first official first day of school for kindergarten students will be Monday, September 21. This will be the start of the Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday in person school days. We are so excited to have you and your child be part of the Moreland school community.
Our new schedule for the school day is from 7:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. When your child is doing distance learning at home, it is expected that he/she will begin the day at 7:30 a.m. with a google meet morning meeting with the teacher and rest of the class. During the day your child will have live interactions via Google Meets in the whole group, small group or one on one instruction along with doing independent work. Students will then be expected to join in the closing class meeting at 1:45 p.m. to end the day. As parents/guardians, it is your responsibility to ensure that your child is ready to learn every day by 7:30 a.m.
Last spring we ended the school year teaching in a crisis as we learned a new way to teach and learn. This year the teachers and staff at Moreland have been busy planning for this new way to start the school year with plans that include more meaningful interactions and ways to connect with each other throughout the day.
We will be doing material pick up on Wednesday, September 9 from 8:00-3:00 and on Thursday, September 10 from 8:00-12:00. This will be a drive up, curbside pick up from your car. A staff member will come out to your car to deliver the materials. Classroom teachers will go over the materials with you during the one on one meet time. Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade families will pick up materials in the front of the school (the main parking lot). 1st and 2nd grade families will pick up materials on the east side of the building (the bus loop door).
The Moreland teachers and staff are back to work planning and getting ready for the start of an exciting new school year! You should have received the letter from your child’s teacher in the mail. This year we are scheduling online meet and greet sessions one on one which will be in a google meet with you, your child and your child’s teacher.
The meet and greet sessions will take place on Thursday, September 10 from 12:00-5:30 and Friday, September 11 from 8:00-1:30. Please sign up for a time by visiting https://www.myconferencetime.com/moreland/ You will be able to sign up for a Meet and Greet time for each child who attends school at Moreland. You will sign up for one 15 minute google meet session with your child’s new teacher. If you are unable to sign up for a Meet and Greet time online please contact your child’s teacher or call the school office at 651-403-7800. We will use google meet for the meeting time. Student Drop Off
When students are back in the building if you will be dropping off or picking up your child at school, we ask that you drive along the curb in the front of the building and drop them off. Please do not park and walk your students into the building. Visitors or parents will not be able to walk their child to their class. We will have staff to supervise and direct students to where they need to go. Please do the same at the end of the day when picking up your child. Stay in your car and drive up along the curb in the front of the building. If you need to pick up your child early from school, please pull up to the front of the building and call the main office number at 651-403-7800. We will get your child and walk them out to the car and have you sign your child out from your car.
Students riding the bus to school must wear masks while riding the bus. Hand sanitizers will also be placed on all busses. Upon arrival at school, all students will remain on the bus until they have been dismissed by a Somerset staff member. We will space out the dismissal of busses to help with social distancing. There will be stars spray painted on the sidewalk as a social distancing visual as well.

Breakfast and Lunch will be consumed in classrooms this school year. Depending on the grade level, lunches will be delivered to the classroom OR students will walk with their class to the cafeteria to pick up their lunches and return to their classrooms.
We will not be able to have the fruit and vegetable bar this school year. Instead, fruits and vegetables will be pre-packaged for students. There will still be both a hot lunch and sandwich options for students each day.
We will also have a touch-free checkout system, so students will not use the keypad to type in their lunch PINs.
Curbside Pick-up will be available to families on the days their children are home for Distance Learning. More information regarding curbside meal pick-up will be shared soon.

Students in the Hybrid model will receive 30 minutes of outdoor recess each day. Our recess area is broken up into sections. Each class cohort will be assigned to a certain section of the playground, which will rotate on a daily basis.
Students will not be required to wear masks while outside at recess. We will have recess paraprofessionals supervising recess and helping to teach students to remain social distanced while outdoors. There will be one para outside assigned to each cohort of students.
Each Hybrid student will be assigned their own locker to use while at Somerset. Our lockers for Hybrid group A and Hybrid group B will alternate, allowing for social distancing while at lockers. There will be no sharing of lockers.
Covid Case Notification
When notified of a confirmed case of COVID-19 involving staff or children, we will follow the guidance of the Minnesota Department of Health. Their team will complete contact tracing and determine any exposure through close contact (anyone who was within 6 feet of the person who is sick while they were considered to be infectious, for 15 minutes or more, regardless of whether either person wore a cloth face covering or face shield). The individual with the confirmed case will be isolated at home for at least 10 days, and for 24 hours with no fever (without fever-reducing medicine) and improvement of respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath) whichever is longer. Anyone with close contact (as defined above) will be guided to stay home for at least 14 days and monitor for symptoms.
Students in school who are demonstrating symptoms (fever of 100.4+, severe headache, sore throat, uncontrolled coughing that causes difficulty breathing, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of smell or taste) will be assessed by the school nurse and directed to the “Special Care Zone," an isolated area, until being picked up; the parent/guardian will contact the office upon arrival; the school nurse or designee, wearing personal protective equipment, will escort the student to the car and strongly encourage testing for COVID-19.
Free meals are now available to all children in School District 197 (ages 1-18). The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it will waive all fees for school meals through December 31, 2020 (or earlier if funding runs out). This is an extension of the summer meals program that provided meals to families throughout distance learning last spring and into the summer. For more information, click here.
How will my student get their free meals?
When learning in-person at school, breakfast and lunch will be available at no cost to students. Students may purchase a carton of milk for $0.50 to go with a breakfast or lunch brought from home, as milk by itself is not free. When learning at home (either as part of hybrid learning or full-time distance learning), a free breakfast and lunch bundle will be available for families to pick up between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at every School District 197 school. Free meals will only be provided for scheduled school days. Meals will not be provided on holidays or scheduled days off. Breakfast and lunch menus are available on the district website. The menus apply to meals served in school and picked up curbside.
Please hang onto the barcoded PIN card you recently received in the U.S. Mail. Students will need these once schools resume normal breakfast and lunch service.
What are the benefits of school meals?
School meals offer students:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits and portion sizes
- Daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables (Note: all students must take at least one 1/2 cup serving of fruit/vegetables with their lunch meal and at least 1/2 cup juice or fruit with their breakfast meal)
- White or flavored fat-free milk or 1% white milk
- Whole grain breads, pastas, and grains
- Lean proteins from meat and non-meat sources
- Options with reduced sodium and limited saturated fats
Do I still need to fill out a Free & Reduced Application (FRP) form
Even though meals are free for the first few months of school, you still need to fill out your Free & Reduced Application form. This ensures you’ll have help paying for meals after December 31 (or earlier if funding runs out), and also helps you cover costs for other school-related activities. In addition, it grants our district access to state funding to support our schools. Complete the 2020-2021 Free & Reduced Meal Application online here or request one by calling 651-403-7320.
Please Note: Families MUST fill out a new application for benefits at the beginning of each school year or benefits will expire on October 22, 2020.
