The school was previously awarded the same grant for five consecutive years from 2013-2017. The grant, totaling $44,874, will be used to fund an ongoing partnership between Moreland and Z Puppets Rosenschnoz, which will extend through August 2019.

“This grant supports Moreland's long-standing partnership with puppetry artists, Z Puppets Rosenschnoz, who have been working with Moreland students and staff over the past six years in an innovative arts and mindfulness program based on their award-winning show, Monkey Mind Pirates,” said Moreland Magnet Coordinator Katie Wiley.

Z Puppets brings a creative blend of music, theater and yoga to Moreland, which help students learn about healthy strategies for processing their emotions and physical wellness. All together these elements are aimed at improving students’ ability to concentrate during classes and as a result, helping to boost their classroom success.

Since 2013, the partnership between the school and Z Puppets has grown from its original focus of introducing students in kindergarten and first grade to the “quest for calm.” Additional grants have expanded the partnership to include students in second grade and special education classrooms, as well as an after-school program for students in third and fourth grade. In more recent years, a staff development component has also been added, bringing Z Puppets’ effective strategies and creative tools to teachers and families.

The latest grant renewal, meanwhile, will allow Z Puppets to integrate more music and art into lessons for Moreland staff, Kindergarten students and their families.

“This year, Z Puppets will provide teachers with professional development in arts integration as well as a series of lessons for kindergarten students,” said Wiley. “The latest grant will also support a new program we call Art In a Box which will provide family workshops and take home art activities for kindergarten families.”
